Paediatric posting is a whole new level of toughness. Why? Basically it's because you are dealing with something so pure and precious. During my ward rounds today, I met a patient who made me teared up (thank god i was wearing a mask because my nose and face will get super red if I'm emotional). This boy is around 95cm in height and he was breathing through an oxygen mask (using BiPap). My friend asked me to guess his age, and I honestly thought he might be around 5 years old. To my surprise, he is a teenager. When I looked at him, I saw tears glistening while he was breathing with a lot of effort. When I read his file, he has kidney problem which requires dialysis, bone disorder which made him wheelchair-bound and recent lung infection. He can't go to school and when I listened to his voice, he even sounded like a young kid. I have a teenage brother who is healthy and currently in his second week of school, so I can't help but compare them both. I reached my limit when I met another patient who is a beautiful 6-month-old baby with Down syndrome. I played with her for a while and then I've found out that she was warded for a few months without anyone visiting her. They suspected that her parents abandoned her because of her condition. I almost teared up again because she was full of smiles and life when I played around with her. We really should count our blessing for having a healthy life and a chance to live normally with people who love us.
